The Need for Scholarships

Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) prides itself on being able to provide a high-quality education to students at an economical cost. Although tuition for a full-time student is approximately $1,100 per semester, this is still costly for some.

A large majority of LFCC students are nontraditional students:

  • About 73 percent are enrolled part time.
  • Some 28 percent are enrolled only in evening courses.
  • Nearly 75 percent are taking courses while working full- or part-time jobs
  • Many are single parents or displaced homemakers who need training or retraining
  • Many are first-generation students or are returning to school after several years of absence

While our scholarship donors are generous with their support, there is still a great need for scholarships. For example:

Academic Year Number of Scholarship Applicants Number of Scholarship Recipients Number of Students Who Did Not Receive Scholarships Total Amount of Scholarships Awarded
2008-09 690 117 573 $152,778
2007-08 539 205 334 $235,776.98
2006-07 237 141 96 $124,791.75
2005-06 373 108 265 $116,900

The rising cost of tuition rates, books and fees creates an ongoing demand for scholarships to enable LFCC students who may not otherwise have the opportunity take advantage of our unique education opportunities.

The College’s scholarship program reduces the financial burden on students who are trying desperately to improve themselves and their role in our workforce. Although tuition at LFCC for full-time students is only $1,082.05 (including fees) per semester, this amount is still out of reach for many in our community.

  • Without scholarships, many students must take semesters off or forgo their education altogether.
  • To address this growing need, the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. seeks to provide additional funding through endowed and annual scholarships, in addition to a variety of program- or location-specific scholarships.
