Our Students' Financial Struggles and How You Can Help
On a regular basis, the Lord Fairfax Community College Educational Foundation Inc. receives pleas for assistance from our students. Many times we are able to assist them, but sometimes we cannot, because our scholarship and emergency funds are limited.
These economic times are difficult for everyone in the LFCC community. We understand that you may have experienced hardships as a result of this financial crisis, and we are thinking of you during this time. After all, it is because of the generosity of our donors that we are able to continue to raise funds for our critical initiatives, including student scholarships, during this financial crisis. In 2007-08 alone, the Foundation awarded scholarships to 205 students who may not have otherwise been able to attend college.
Following are just a few real-life e-mail excerpts to illustrate the challenges our students face. (The students’ names and other identifying information have been removed to protect their privacy). Because of the generosity of donors to the Foundation, we were able to assist these students. That is – hands down – the most rewarding part of philanthropy and the reason our donors give.
We realize that you help our students as part of your professional responsibilities. However, if you would like to help them on a personal, philanthropic level, please consider contributing to one of our emergency funds:
- Bob Sowder Emergency Scholarship Fund
- Emergency Fund for Health Professions Students
- Helping Hand Emergency Scholarship Fund
- O'Shaughnessy-Hurst Memorial Foundation Emergency Scholarship Fund
- TRIO Student Support Services Program Crisis Fund
- TRIO Student Support Services Program (TRIO SSS Program) Discretionary Scholarship Fund
