William A. Hazel
William A. Hazel moved to Broad Run in 1957 after serving his country in the U.S. Army. Settling in the area, Hazel founded William A. Hazel Inc., a total site development contractor company headquartered in Chantilly, Va. For more than 45 years, Hazel and his company have supported the economic development and growth of the Northern Virginia area through all aspects of site development and road construction.
In addition to serving the area’s developers and builders, Hazel is committed to supporting the community through philanthropic giving. In 2005, Hazel donated $125,000 to establish the William A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship through the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation to benefit Fauquier County residents. Since then, he has contributed $85,000 to the Foundation.
“Education is the basic foundation of everything,” said Hazel, who supported his five children through college. “Community colleges play a critical part in the educational system.”
Hazel recognizes that four-year colleges and universities are bursting at the seams and are sometimes difficult for students to gain acceptance to and afford with rising tuition costs. “The community colleges need to expand in order to give everyone the opportunity to receive an education at a reasonable cost,” Hazel said. “Lord Fairfax means a great deal to the community because it meets this goal.”
“Mr. Hazel’s commitment to education is outstanding. It is refreshing to have a community leader like Mr. Hazel who knows the value of education and personally invests in it,” said Linnie Carter, vice president of college advancement at LFCC and executive director of the Foundation. “LFCC’s students will greatly benefit from the William A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship, which will last in perpetuity thanks to the generosity of Mr. Hazel.”
