Budget Cuts
Greetings! As you may have recently heard in the news, all state-supported agencies are required to submit a 5-percent budget reduction plan to the Office of the Governor for fiscal year 2007-08. Because LFCC is a state-supported institution of higher education, we too are required to submit such a plan. To learn more about the economic trends that led to this requirement, please read Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s remarks to the Senate Finance, House Finance and House Appropriations Committees: http://www.governor.virginia.gov/MediaRelations/NewsReleases/viewRelease.cfm?id=481.
LFCC is committed to preserving the resources necessary to accomplish its core mission of educating the community. Our most important resources are our employees. Currently filled positions are not included in our budget cut recommendations. In addition, we will continue recruiting for many of the various vacant full-time positions that are currently being advertised.
As funding from the state continues to dwindle, the role of the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. is more important today than ever before. The Foundation’s mission is simple: to generate and manage private support for unfunded projects that support the College’s mission. Because of the generosity of donors like you, the Foundation provides much-needed monies to support and supplement College programs, services and initiatives. We hope we can continue to count on your financial support and investment in our community.
Despite these budget challenges, the year ahead is a promising one for LFCC. We are confident we will weather this challenge and emerge a stronger and healthier institution. In addition, it is important to note that progress on the Science and Health Professions Building and the Corron Community Development Center will continue due to already committed state and private funds.
If you have any questions, please contact Linnie Carter, vice president of college advancement, at (540) 868-4077 or lcarter@lfcc.edu or John J. “Ski” Sygielski, LFCC’s president, at (540) 868-7101 or johnski@lfcc.edu.
Thank you for your continued commitment to our favorite community college!

Quality Enhancement Plan
The College is in the process of reaffirming its accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. As part of the reaffirmation process, LFCC has submitted a five-year Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) on the topic of critical thinking.
Critical thinking is a set of habits, involving such attributes as using creativity to find solutions; evaluating and justifying claims; and reflecting on our own thinking. The goal of the QEP is to help individuals who come in contact with LFCC to explore their thinking and find ways to improve it, both inside and outside the classroom.
For more information about the QEP topic, the various activities supporting the QEP and the reaffirmation process, you can visit the College’s Web site at http://www.lfcc.edu/SACS/.
