Opportunities to invest in Lord Fairfax Community College

Scholarships for Members of LFCC’s Athletic Programs

The Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc. is seeking support for LFCC’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. Increasing the number of scholarships available to LFCC students will help to increase the number of students who enroll in and graduate from the College and, consequently, the number of professionals working in our community.

What is LFCC’s Athletic Scholarship Fund?
The Foundation’s Athletic Scholarship Fund provides LFCC students who are members of one or more of the College’s athletic teams with monies for tuition, fees and books. Currently, the College has men’s and women’s basketball and soccer teams. Due to its membership in the Virginia Community College System League, LFCC is able to compete against community colleges throughout Virginia. In addition, the College competes against teams in Maryland and North Carolina.
How does the Foundation’s Athletic Scholarship Fund benefit students, the community and the College?

For the 2009-10 academic year, the College recruited more than 10 athletes who did not initially intend on pursuing a degree. It was only after they learned of LFCC’s athletic program that they looked into taking classes here. However, had the Athletic Scholarship Fund been available, we might have been able to recruit more students. By providing scholarships to these athletes, we are opening doors and academic opportunities to individuals who otherwise would not be able to pursue higher education.

Providing these students with scholarships also benefits our community, as the majority of LFCC graduates live and work locally. In addition, it will help the College achieve its enrollment and retention goals, as the results from numerous studies conclude that student engagement is a key factor in student retention. Student participation in extracurricular activities has been repeatedly found to increase students’ self-esteem, motivation and overall engagement.

Total investment: $65,000 (13 scholarships at $5,000 each)
