History Instructor

How long have you been an instructor at LFCC?
Since 2000 — about nine years.
What do you enjoy the most about being an LFCC instructor?
Teaching students about their world and how it got that way. Watching students catch on and mature into young men and women ready to succeed.
What classes do you teach at the College?
A long list that includes Introduction to Asian Civilizations, The American Political Tradition, The American Constitution, The Second World War and World Civilizations.
Why do you think it is important to raise scholarship funds for students?
There are many students who want to succeed here, who could succeed here, but financial constraints hold them back. Some of my students are single mothers with a big dream: to get a better, more satisfying career that will allow them to support their children, and — at the same time — act as a role model for their children to strive to succeed through education. Some students need a bit of financial help to get through, and money spent on education is never wasted; it is a social investment in the future.
What are the biggest changes you have seen at LFCC during your tenure?
Growth. The student body has grown from about 4,000 when I got here to over 7,500 today. I have seen two new buildings rise from the sod. I have seen a multiplication of transfer agreements with neighboring institutions, further increasing our value to this community and the commonwealth. I have seen the beginnings of an athletic program, expansion in Workforce Services and Continuing Education training staff and facilities. The number of faculty members has grown. The physical environment has also improved: the faculty and student lounges have both been upgraded: we have new classrooms with up-to-date instructional equipment. This is a very different place from the one I first walked into nine years ago.
What degrees do you hold?
A bachelor’s in history & English (double major) from Southern Wesleyan University, a master’s in history from Clemson University and a Ph.D. in modern European history from the University of South Carolina.
